“People are anxious to improve their circumstances but unwilling to improve themselves, they therefore remain bound.”
–James Allen
In the last post I briefly discussed the concept of “The Machine”, or alter-conscience. I believe this is the most vital subject to discuss when it comes to self-awareness and controlling your emotions, thus will spend a substantial amount of time talking about it in future posts. The Machine, is a powerful concept that can explain some of our actions in certain situations. This Machine has the ability to dominate your thoughts and actions most often in situations which you experience fear, nerves, or any self doubt. If you could watch a movie of your thoughts you would notice this experience is always there, but becomes aggressively noticeable in the above situations.
The easiest way to quickly explain the Machine is the cinematic clique of the voices in your head. It is an inner battle between you and your conscience. In today’s world the imposing alter-conscience tends to dominate. To relate the text to a pop culture example could be the movie Click, where Mr. Sandler gets his life controlled by a universal remote. After the remote is programmed to skip certain events, it starts to automatically fast forward to the desired event or until the event has ended, most notably sex. The Machine is like this too, it has the ability to take information from previous events and remind you when in similar situations. The positive and negative influences in your life are always categorized, and the Machine has a tendency to bring them back contentiously. There are beneficial outcomes to this; you could be reminded about a past situation where you preformed gallantly. However, the bad constantly outweighs the good, and this is the case here, too.
This is the case most recognizable in children, for instance, when a child is afraid of heights, it is because of previous negative experiences. Studies have shown that these are the breeding years for your memories that effect your outlook on life. (read more here) The child has the luxury of only gaining new knowledge, too, and not creating contradictory discoveries.
Back to the topic of fear of heights. If a child is posed with a situation where he/she encounters heights in a harmful way, then the child makes a mental note of his/her experience. Then all outlooks on heights will be traced back to the most dominate memory - the first. When the child has a similar situation where heights are encountered, the Machine has data to remind you of the previous negative experience. The little voice begins to talk to your regular conscious, the one you would consider your mental thoughts, and suddenly the old fear of heights is recreated from the reminder of event. The voices would be influencing you by saying things like, “You will fall,” “Don’t get to close,” “You will get hurt”, and so on. Of course, all of these are derived from the precious negative experience. Now the child is in a state of worry. Worry (which will be discussed later) is possibly the worst state of mentality you can be in. The situation would then become an unpleasant event and only scaring the child with more fear and content for the Machine to bring up in future situations.
This is a minor case of the Machine, and with maturity people grow out of these small incidents. This is because as we essentially grow up, we develop a better form of reason, and we can think through our own fears. Also, as you learn to control your basic fears, you reprogram your Machine to not interfere.
This is one of the ways to overtake your Machine. If not, the Machine can still dominate you in current affairs like job interviews, relationships, and overall self-esteem. The key to controlling the Machine is experience and realization, both of which I will discuss in future posts. Though to constantly control your Machine, you must understand it and why it is there.
The concept of an alter-conscience has been taught for decades by psychologists, most notably, Sigmund Freud. Mr. Freud proposed his theory of the Id, ego, and the super ego. The present day Machine or alter-conscience is similar to the Id and Freud’s ego. (Because of today’s interpretation of the meaning of the word ego, I will state Freud’s ego). Mr. Freud’s proposals of the Id and ego are the revolutionary starting point of the unconscious and conscious mind. Freud proposed that the Id was the conscious mind desiring impulses like food, mating, and entertainment. While Freud’s ego is the link between the id and super ego, it controls the memory, thoughts, judgment, and tolerance. The super ego is the control over good and bad. When we are born, we do not know what is good or bad, what hurts, what is pleasurable. As we become more aware of our surrounding, we discover the desire for pleasure, and we then cultivate our life around the principle of our desire for affection and pleasure. Our life is still based around this principle. All of these are in the category of the Psychic Apparatus. The Machine is the link between the three of Freud’s proposed theories. It is also the conscious version of all three, it is the being that directly communicates to your conscious mind and unconscious .
One more note to discuss in the introduction to the Machine is the fact that the Machine is your friend. No, this is not a contradictory statement, but through evolution we have developed this alter-conscience, and it is there for good reason. The Machine can be used as a way to redistribute your thought process and become more of a cognitive Machine. By owning your Machine you have achieved the highest state of metal perfection and thus can understand what and why you react. If the Machine is the basis of all your conscious and subconscious actions, by controlling it you develop a control over your idle state of mind, you can realize the false understatements of your alter-conscience and have a self-aware mind. That being said your Machine is a part of you and never will go away. People have unknowingly tried to rid their conscious of the presence of persuading negative thoughts, but have failed. Do not try to rid yourself of your own self conscious, but embrace it and realize its presence.
Consequently, the Machine has been affecting you since your date of conception. After all the years of stagnation the Machine needs to be discussed and realized by today’s population. People need to have a philosophy and understanding of the way they think and react. You cannot control the objects around you, but you can control your mental being. If your mental being is under the influence of a negatively charged Machine, then your regular mental cognizance is being negatively affected To advance your mastering of your position in life you must control all things in your own power. Controlling your Machine means you have achieved a higher state of being and have mastered the toughest terrain, your mind.
